Consumers on the second-hand market have been hesitant to purchase used electric cars, according to a survey carried out by research site AutoScout24.

Researchers analysed second-hand sales statistics across the first five months of 2022 and found that electric cars are not yet close to supplanting internal combustion engine vehicles, chiefly due to limited supply, high prices, and uncertainty about the reliability of batteries.

Electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for just 2.5% and 6% of searches on the platform, respectively. This is in line with registrations for used electric and hybrid vehicles, which currently account for 1.5% and 5.7% market share, respectively.

Second-hand diesel vehicles are still in high demand, accounting for 36.5% of vehicle registrations in the first five months of the year, compared to nearly 40% in the same period last year.

Vehicles which are 5-14 years old with diesel engines are most popular, counting for almost half the total registrations of used diesel vehicles. This age range corresponds to a time in which diesel vehicles were encouraged by the authorities and their price fell significantly.
