CD&V president Sammy Mahdi launched a non-profit organisation on Saturday at the Oud-Heverlee Leuven (OHL) club football stadium. It intends to help clubs launch women’s teams.

“In Belgium, girls have too few opportunities to play women’s football in their neighbourhoods, too often ending up in male environments. Less than half of Belgian clubs currently have a women’s team. That’s what we want to address by launching this non-profit association”, Mahdi said.

From 50,000 female players at present, the MP hopes that the sport will see 100,000 participants by 2030. The “Gelijkspel” not-for-profit association is to provide a framework for clubs to help them obtain funding, organise events and exchange best practices.
