A cycling tunnel underneath the Brussels Ring Road was opened on Wednesday between the municipality of Overijse and the Forêt de Soignes cycling network.

The project cost €2.6 million and now allows cyclists to link the two networks via the tunnel. The infrastructure responds to previous complaints about having to get off their bikes and pass the tunnel on foot.

Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters explained that the tunnel is part of ongoing renovation works to the Brussels Ring Road.

Peeters said that the Flemish government wanted to improve cyclist safety and eliminate "the barrier formed by the Ring Road," which separates residential areas from nature.

Although cyclists can now make use of the tunnel, further measures are planned to improve its functionality, such as the installation of ramps and lighting.
