A seven-year-old girl from Schaerbeek who was rushed to the hospital after a near-drowning passed away on Monday night, prosecutors confirmed Tuesday.
The girl's unconscious body was recovered from the water after she was spotted drowning in a beach in Hofstade's Bloso recreational domain, to the north of the Brussels region, on Sunday afternoon.A
After attempts to reanimate her through CPR the girl was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
The girl, who was swimming with her parents in the protected area of the domain's beach, was not allowed to go into the water, according to Het Laatste Nieuws.
Authorities have opened an investigation to further determine the circumstances surrounding the accident, and an autopsy will be performed.
