Warsaw to buy $15 billion worth of Patriot air defences from the United States

Poland will acquire $15 billion worth of Patriot air defence systems from the US, under a deal unveiled on Wednesday by the Pentagon.

A US Defense Department agency, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), said the sale would include up to 48 Patriot PAC-3 launchers and up to 644 missiles, as well as radars and other equipment.

According to the DSCA, the State Department, which has authority over US arms exports, approved the sale.

The proposed sale will improve Poland’s missile defense capability and contribute to Poland’s military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies,” the agency said in a statement.

The Patriot systems are designed to work even against high-speed missiles and aircraft.

They have proved highly effective in Ukraine, protecting Kyiv’s territory from Russian air attacks, including tactical ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles.
