Ostende city is stepping up beach safety education and awareness efforts this summer.
The city noted a frequent lack of knowledge amongst holidaymakers about safety regulations, such as restricted swimming areas and times. Overcrowded beaches have also led to a significant issue with lost children.
In the previous year, an alarming 420 children were reported missing, with only a fifth having worn preventative wristbands. Recognising the critical need to better these statistics, Ostende city is actively promoting the use of wristbands and directional signs.
City representatives explained, “The Beachteam will distribute wristbands and foster safety awareness among beachgoers. Lifesavers and promenade shops will also provide these wristbands. We’re introducing beach signs adorned with emojis to assist people in navigation. Any lost children will also be cared for at a dedicated area.”
Additionally, signboards communicationg various safety related issues have been set up at beach entrances. These messages emphasize safe swimming, beach cleanliness, and heat protection.
