Emergency services rescued two 16-year-olds from Ostende waters last Friday.
The teenagers found themselves in danger due to strong currents. One of the teens got into trouble around 3pm, which led to his friend attempting a rescue. However, his friend also succumbed to the currents, causing both of them to drift away.
City issues swimming warning
Rescuers eventually brought them back to shore, with one teen hospitalised as a precaution.
Following this incident, Oostende city officials issued a warning about the risks of swimming near breakwaters and underscored that swimming in such areas is prohibited due to significant danger.
Mayor Bart Tommelein of the Open Vld party emphasized the necessity of entering the sea only in supervised areas, and maintaining vigilance.
City alderwoman Silke Beirens of the Groen party reiterated the importance of adhering to lifeguard instructions, advising, “Those who aren’t proficient swimmers should always ensure they can touch the ground. Keep a safe distance from breakwaters and never swim alone.
