A Brussels Airlines plane had to abort its landing at Zaventem at midday on Tuesday because a vehicle was in the way. On board the plane was a high-flying Antwerp delegation comprising the mayor Bart De Wever and the Port alderman Annick De Ridder.

After preparing for touchdown, the pilot of the flight from Hamburg climbed back to altitude to avoid a maintenance vehicle close to the runway.

"At no time was there any danger to passengers," Brussels Airport affirmed. "The safety procedures worked and led to the aircraft 'going around' on the instructions of air traffic control."

The airport will conduct an investigation to determine the causes of the incident. The delegation was returning from an economic mission to the city in northern Germany.
