Bus drivers of the regional public transport operator TEC are on strike and are refusing to leave a depot in the Walloon municipality of Jodoigne on Thursday morning over a lack of maintenance of the network's vehicles, which is putting staff at risk.
The regional public transport operator TEC is bracing itself for further disruptions in its network, especially in the province of Walloon Brabant as a result of these actions.
“We currently have no indication of how long the strike will last,” the operator stated before promising to keep commuters and travellers "informed of the situation."
The strike first began spontaneously on Wednesday and continued into Thursday after two recent incidents endangered the depot's staff.
On Saturday, a bus lost its rear-view mirror while travelling on a high-speed route, with another bus' tyres bursting three days later. These issues have been blamed on a lack of maintenance on the rolling stock, which has resulted in a rising sense of insecurity for TEC workers.
"It's a problem we've known about for a long time," trade union spokesperson Alain Maetens told RTBF. "It's a manufacturing defect."
