French-speaking liberal party Mouvement Réformateur (MR) leader Georges-Louis Bouchez has chosen Françoise Bertieaux to replace Valérie Glatigny as Minister for Higher Education, Youth Aid and Sport in the French Community Government.

This appointment comes after Glatigny's surprise resignation on Thursday for health reasons. The Minister spent four years in her position.

"I am happy that my [party] president thought of me making a return to politics," Bertieaux announced. "I left four years ago to follow my husband to New York and today I have been given the opportunity to take over a Minister who has done extremely good work. I find myself at home. It is a great feeling to become a Minister when I thought that that chapter had ended. It is also a big challenge."

The 64-year-old politician previously served as Member of Parliament in the Brussels-Capital Region from 1999 to 2001, MR group leader in the French Community Government, Etterbeek Alderwoman, and President of the Etterbeek CPAS.

Bertieaux will take over seven of Glatigny's nine competences. Sport and social advancement matters will be entrusted to Pierre-Yves Jeholet "to rebalance the portfolio", indicated Bouchez during a press conference.
