Climate activists from Code Red are still occupying an Engie site in Flémalle, Liège. The energy company wants to build a new gas plant there, with activists have been campaigning against the plans on site since Wednesday evening.
The activists are wearing masks to avoid being identified, and there have been gradually fewer people today.
A spokesperson on Friday stated that there are still some 300 people on site, down from about 400 on Wednesday night. No arrests have reportedly been made yet.
Engie has no plans to evict the protesters. “We respect freedom of expression, but our main concern is the safety of people and protesters. People should not forget that this is an industrial site,” the company says.
Engie further says it is actively working on the energy transition and wants to be carbon-neutral by 2045. The plant in Flémalle is needed to ensure security of supply but in the long run, the plant will be carbon neutral, Engie claimed.
