A Brussels municipal councillor has been found guilty of taking part in the burglary of a betting shop in the municipality of Schaerbeek in February, according to a ruling on Thursday.

Kenan Aydogan, former Écolo councillor in the municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in Brussels, has been handed a probationary sentence which will see him banned from betting shops and casinos for his involvement in the burglary.

Aydogan was found guilty by a Brussels correctional court of helping his accomplices to rob a Schaerbeek betting shop in February.

Following the theft, security footage from the betting shop, a Ladbrokes, was released, showing the former councillor enter the shop just before the burglary took place.

In March, the 30-year-old man announced he was leaving green party Écolo and leaving politics behind "for personal reasons," according to reports in local media.
