The ‘Flemish Masters in situ’ network on Thursday kicked off a new campaign in Tongeren that places masterpieces from the post-Medieval period to the Second World War in the national and international spotlight.
This series of masterpieces deployed in 75 locations in Flanders is in addition to the temporary ‘Flemish Masters in situ’ network, which allowed tourists to discover 45 hidden artistic gems from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries between 2018 and 2020.
“In Flanders, many important and beautiful works of art are exhibited outside museums and are always hung in the places for which they were created,” Peter Wouters of Openbaar Kunstbezit Vlaanderen arts and culture magazine explained.
“The experience is different if you know the story, if you know how the artist took light and the client into account,” he added. “If you know the whole context, the perception and experience are different.”
Openbaar Kunstbezit Vlaanderen hopes that the ‘Flemish Masters in situ’ network will bring these works of art to a wider audience.
