Teams of divers from the Brussels fire brigade were called in by police on Monday morning to search for a body in the canal near the Allée Verte in Brussels.
The Brussels public prosecutor's office confirmed on Monday afternoon that a body had been found there.
"A body has been found in the canal. The Brussels public prosecutor's office has been notified and has referred the case to a forensic pathologist," the prosecutor's office announced. "He has been sent to the scene. An autopsy will be requested."
"The investigation is ongoing and at this stage the public prosecutor's office will make no further comment," it added.
