A series of explosions targeted an ATM in the municipality of Tielt-Winge (Flemish Brabant) on Thursday morning.
The ATM was destroyed by a series of three explosions, local media reported. This information has been confirmed by local authorities.
The explosions happened at around 03:40. Local residents were awakened by three loud bangs. Arriving on the scene, police and emergency services found that a cashpoint in a local shopping centre had been targeted with explosives.
The damage to the machine is significant but the blasts did not cause extensive damage to the building. It is not yet known if the perpetrators managed to take money from the ATM.
The Leuven Public Prosecutor's Office has since been notified of the incident. A forensic laboratory belonging to the Federal Police is on the scene, as well as experts from SEDEE, Belgium's military bomb squad.
