A pizzeria in the Antwerp district of Berchem was damaged by an explosion last night, the local police report. Investigations should reveal whether there is a link to the drug environment.
A little before 02:30, a loud bang was heard near a pizzeria on the Diksmuidelaan, a police spokesperson said. The emergency services were immediately notified, Belga News Agency reports.
A witness also quickly undertook a successful extinguishing attempt, limiting the damage to the door. "Perhaps someone had set off heavy firecrackers," the spokesman said.
Police checks in the area yielded nothing. A perimeter was set up and the forensic lab came to the scene for investigation. An investigation has been opened to look into whether the incident is linked to the drug environment. No one was injured.
