A woman has died and 14 people were injured on Tuesday night after a violent explosion in a building in Valladolid, Spain.

According to the emergency services, the explosion took place shortly before 23:00 in a four-storey building in Valladolid, which is home to 300,000 inhabitants and capital of the northern region of Castilla y León. The explosion may have been linked to a gas leak, local authorities say.

After several hours of searching, emergency services discovered the lifeless body of a 53-year-old woman at dawn on Wednesday. The woman was trapped in the rubble of the building, which caught fire after the explosion.

14 people were also injured in the blast and ten of them were taken to hospital, the emergency services said. Among them, two are in a serious condition, Valladolid City Council stated.

The causes of the incident are being investigated, but according to the initial information available, "everything suggests that it could have been a gas explosion", the first deputy mayor of Valladolid, Irene Carvajal, told the press.
