François Boland, a devoted botany and gardening enthusiast, has transformed his passion into a thriving profession.

Since 2009, he has been catering to the desires of eager gardeners across Europe by delivering plants ordered online from his Wallonia-based nursery, Jardins du Monde. This remarkable nursery's catalogue is ever-evolving and diverse, adapting to the changing seasons, even after weathering the difficult last few years of the Covid-19 crisis.

During the pandemic, many people experienced feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression. However, several studies showed that a large percentage of those with access to green spaces, either at home or on allotments, found great value in gardening during that time.

Whether in urban or rural settings, gardening was seen as a universal means to relax, socialise, connect with nature, or stay physically active. Most gardeners experienced increased joy, a sense of reassurance, and a greater connection to the natural world. These positive therapeutic and psychological benefits helped many people to get through the pandemic. Gardening became a refuge – a safe space away from daily worries.

Overcoming gardening challenges

Increased gardening time also paved the way for novel and imaginative practices, bringing joy to numerous participants.

Nevertheless, the pandemic presented enthusiasts with obstacles to gardening, such as limited access to garden spaces and materials, something that Jardins du Monde benefitted from thanks to its online service. However, the pandemic also presented Boland and his business with unique challenges.

"Spring 2020 marked a momentous period for our nursery, as everything grew exponentially amid the Covid pandemic and widespread lockdowns that forced physical businesses to close across Europe, including Belgium,” François Boland told The Brussels Times. “As a result, the internet became the primary channel for private individuals to make their purchases."

"The jardin-du-monde.be website experienced an overwhelming surge in traffic, leading to a flood of orders," he continued. "The team worked tirelessly, racing against time to handle the increased demand. However, this rapid growth led to stocks depleting faster than anticipated, compounded by external logistical challenges, particularly with carriers facing staff shortages. Some suppliers were forced to close, making replenishment even more challenging."

In response, Boland and his team quickly adapted by searching for alternative suppliers and reliable delivery companies. They soon established an efficient organisational system that ensured smooth and rapid deliveries, much to the delight of their customers.

Growing botanical wonders

"Since emerging from the dark period of the pandemic, Jardins du Monde.be has continued to grow its shipments and successfully retained loyal customers," he added. "Interestingly, we noticed that Belgians have become more confident in purchasing plants online, once they experienced the convenience and quality of our services."

As a result, Boland has expanded the range of plants on offer. Constantly in pursuit of botanical wonders, he scours professional fairs worldwide to discover rare and lesser-known species, offering them for sale through Jardins du Monde.be. The nursery also provides a selection of more traditional plants, carefully chosen for their garden and terrace landscaping potential.

Before shipping, all the plants at Jardinsdumonde.be are nurtured in a dedicated growth field in Flémalle. The online nursery prides itself on offering a wide range of top-quality plants at affordable prices, guaranteeing swift delivery services across Europe.

The nursery's specialty lies in young shrubs, free from the root limitations often seen in older container-grown subjects. Seedlings benefit from deeper and more efficient root systems, making them a favourable choice for gardeners.

Creating the ultimate nursery

One of their latest and most exciting additions is the Siberian kiwi or Kiwai, a fruit-bearing tree similar to the familiar Actinidia deliciosa (kiwi) but with a non-hairy skin and superior hardiness, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -25°C. This climbing plant requires sturdy support for its long lianas and yields its delicious fruit in late summer to early autumn.

Another delightful addition is the variegated elderberry, known as Sambucus 'Golden Spark.' This relatively new shrub boasts striking white streaks on its foliage and produces lovely flowering corymbs. Reaching up to three meters in height, it thrives in sunny locations or even partial shade.

For those seeking an eye-catching feature in shaded areas, the Corylus avellana 'Aurea' (hazel) is a beloved choice. Its radiant yellow foliage stands out beautifully against purple foliage in garden settings.

François Boland's dedication to curating an exceptional nursery experience shines through in every aspect of Jardins du Monde.be. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a plant enthusiast seeking unique treasures, this online nursery promises to cater to your botanical desires with utmost care and expertise.
