A higher-than-usual tide coupled with strong winds caused sandy cliffs to form on beaches in Blankenberge and Bredene on Wednesday evening.

The Flemish Maritime and Coastal Services Agency, MDK, says it will monitor the weather situation over the next few days and determine on Monday whether any action is required.

During Wednesday's high tide, the water level was 40 to 50 centimetres higher than usual and two-metre-high waves were recorded, due to a strong north-westerly wind. This led to the formation of sandy bluffs half a metre high.

For the moment, MDK is not intervening. “Gusts of 7 to 8 Beaufort are forecast again for the next few days, so taking action now to flatten the cliffs doesn’t make much sense,” agency spokesman Peter Van Camp explained.

“The situation is not too dangerous at the moment," he added. "On Monday we will reassess it, to determine what action is necessary.”
