A woman was struck by a STIB tram and seriously injured in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht on Monday, the Brussels fire brigade reports. The victim was trapped under the vehicle.
At around 11:30 on Monday morning, emergency services were called to an incident of a woman who had been hit by a tram on Rue Wayez. Following the collision, the pedestrian ended up underneath the tram and was dragged for several metres before the vehicle reached a full stop.
Firefighters, with the support of medics and STIB technicians, used hydraulic jacks to lift the vehicle so that the victim could be extracted from underneath the tram.
The injured woman was quickly freed by emergency workers. She was stabilised at the scene of the accident and has been rushed to Brussels' Erasmus hospital in a "conscious but worrying state". The tram driver was also transported to hospital to be treated for shock.
"The circumstances of the accident are the subject of investigation by the police, which has also installed a security perimeter," said Brussels fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
Tram traffic has been stopped between the Albert I and Marius Renard tram stops, as well as between De Linde and Saint-Guidon and Cureghem.
