A Belgian driver (58) of an empty horse truck was seriously injured in an accident on a motorway near the municipality of Haag in Austria, in the state of Lower Austria.
On Sunday around 20:30, the man lost control of his vehicle, presumably due to a burst tyre, which then overturned and caught fire. The passenger, a Belgian woman (59), also suffered serious injuries, several Austrian media report.
Some witnesses to the accident – including a member of the volunteer fire brigade – were able to get the occupants out of the driver's cab seconds before the truck caught fire. This led to a huge blaze, which the couple would likely not have been able to escape under their own power.
Still, they were both badly injured. The woman was taken to hospital by helicopter and the man by ambulance, according to emergency services. The motorway to Vienna was completely closed for a while due to the accident.
