A 28-year-old Belgian fell to his death in the Pyrenees on Saturday, his family told Belga News Agency on Tuesday.
The accident occurred in the French department of Haute-Garonne, where the man was on a multi-day hike with a group of friends. The group, aged between 20 and 30, had extensive experience in mountain hiking.
According to the French Gendarmerie’s mountain rescue service, the hikers were well equipped and reacted in an exemplary manner. A major rescue operation was carried out to no avail, as the fall was fatal.
“Above all, the family and group of friends would like to be able to say their goodbyes in peace and have time to recover from this tragic accident,” the victim’s relatives said.
