Dairy production in Flanders is more climate-friendly than elsewhere in Europe, the Flemish Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) claims in a new study.

The results of the study, in which some 150 dairy farms in the north of the country took part, were presented on Tuesday.

It found that the production of one litre of milk is accompanied on average by the emission of 0.99 kilogrammes of CO2-equivalents, less than dairy countries such as Denmark (1.06 kg), Ireland (1.13 kg) and the Netherlands (1.17 kg).

The farms studied were measured against various factors and their total ecological footprint over a full year was estimated.

They also received advice on how to continue their efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
