The wife of Mexican drug trafficker 'El Chapo,' sentenced in November 2021 by a US court to three years in prison, was released on Wednesday, according to prison administration records.

Emma Coronel Aispuro had admitted her involvement in trafficking for the powerful Sinaloa cartel led by her husband Joaquin Guzman, alias El Chapo. In June 2021, she pleaded guilty to three charges: participation in drug trafficking, laundering of monetary instruments and transactions with a foreign drug trafficker.

Aged 34, the former US teenage beauty queen was held until her release in a closed centre for prisoners nearing the end of their sentences in Long Island, California.

Under the terms of her sentence, she will remain on probation for four years.

Joaquin Guzman was considered the world’s most powerful drug trafficker until his arrest in 2016 and extradition to the US in 2017.

Sentenced in July 2019 to life imprisonment after a high-security trial in New York, he is serving his sentence in a high-security prison in Colorado.
