Local authorities in Malmedy have called on residents to refrain from eating fish caught in the Warche following the spillage of significant amounts of fuel oil into the river on Thursday.
The pollution, reported by the municipality on its Facebook page, was caused by a cracked fuel oil tank belonging to a private individual.
The fuel oil entered the river at Bévercé, according to the municipality, which said the environmental police had visited the scene.
At around midday, the fire brigade was mobilised to place booms and absorbent material near Bévercé and the police headquarters in Malmedy.
While many litres of oil were recovered, the local authorities recommend that people refrain from eating fish caught in the river.
