The measure that makes it financially attractive for retirees to return to work in the care sector or to stay in work has been extended by one year, La Libre Belgique reports on Monday.

The measure, which applies to retirees aged over 65 or retired from 1 July 2022, will remain in force until 30 September 2024 (it was initially due to end on 30 September this year).

"The extension of the measure is an excellent thing for the many establishments that now rely on these additional workers," according to the office of Health and Social Affairs Minister, Frank Vandenbroucke.

"It is touching to see that so many people who have devoted their entire lives to healthcare are prepared to continue. Experienced staff is particularly timely now. And it goes without saying that we need to create advantageous financial conditions for these people," commented Vandenbroucke.

In concrete terms, the Federal Government had arranged for people in this group to be exempt from personal social security contributions and for their income to be taxed at a separate, advantageous rate of 33%.

Currently, 1,689 pensioners (698.9 full-time equivalents) and 1,001 employers are making use of this measure.
