Mexican writer and former diplomat Andrés Roemer, accused of rape and sexual abuse, was arrested in Israel on Monday and will be extradited, Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador announced.
“He was arrested in Israel and will be extradited to Mexico,” President Lopez Obrador said at his daily press conference without giving further details.
Mexico had demanded the extradition of the former diplomat, who has Mexican and Israeli nationality, in June 2021 following an arrest warrant from Mexico City’s Supreme Court.
The accusations against Roemer, some 60 according to a women’s rights group, multiplied from February 2021 when dancer Itzel Schnaas accused him of sexual assault.
The writer “categorically” denied this initial accusation on X (ex-Twitter) before withdrawing from social networks as the allegations against him multiplied.
According to his accusers, the former diplomat, now aged 60, used to summon his victims to his home or office under a professional pretext.
Andrés Roemer also carried out philanthropic actions, including being a UNESCO goodwill ambassador. The UN organisation broke off relations with him as the accusations multiplied.
