Flemish and Brussels politicians laid the symbolic first stone at the construction site of the new building of Flemish public broadcaster VRT on Wednesday on Boulevard Reyers in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek.
A ceremony was held in the presence of Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon, Flemish Minister of Media Benjamin Dalle, Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Planning Ans Persoons, and VRT CEO Frederik Delplace.
The VRT boss stated that the project was already on schedule and on budget. The building is set to be finished by the end of 2026 and the news agency will move to the new premises the following year. The company will fund the new project itself thanks to the sale of land to the Brussels-Capital Region and the reduced energy costs of its new building.
VRT’s French-language counterpart RTBF is also building its own new headquarters at the site. This complex would be open to the public and also incorporate housing, schools, shops, higher education, and green public spaces, Persoons claimed.
