Violent crime was down in the USA in 2022 compared with the previous year, with a drop in all categories except robberies, according to annual statistics released on Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The decline averaged 1.7%, with murders down 6.1%, rapes down 5.4% and violent assaults down 1.1%, the FBI said. On the other hand, robberies rose by 1.3%.

Hate crime statistics were stable, focusing mainly on black people for racist assaults, Jews for those motivated by religious affiliation and homosexual men for those linked to sexual orientation, says the FBI.

These figures are a reminder that “hate hides but never goes away,” President Joe Biden commented in a statement, noting a “25% increase in anti-Semitic acts between 2021 and 2022.”
