The 43rd edition of the Brussels International Animation Film Festival, to be held from 23 February to 3 March 2024, will focus on science fiction, Anima organisers announced on Monday morning.
"Drawing inspiration from contemporary trends, Anima 2024 will be devoted to science fiction in animation, with a host of new feature-length and short films, as well as reruns of some of the genre's iconic films," say the organisers. A major retrospective of some of the classics will be held at the Cinematek.
The Brussels festival, which has been held at Flagey since 2007, will also be moving to a new venue this year: the Théâtre Marni. Located on the other side of Place Flagey, the theatre will be hosting around 30 extra screenings.
In total, there will be more than 120 animated film screenings for children and adults over 10 days during the Carnival break. Several "festive and joyful events" will also punctuate the festival, including this year's 'digital playground', where "the whole family can try their hand at the new technologies of animated film while having fun," say the organisers.
The Anima festival attracts some 40,000 people every year. Its winners qualify for the Oscar for the 'Best animated short film'. The shortlisted films will be announced on 1 December.
