Police in Les Fourons on Tuesday intercepted a truck loaded with 106 barrels of chemical waste during a joint operation with customs. The waste reportedly came from a Walloon factory.

The operation was specifically aimed at the illegal transport of waste. “Over the past few months, we have observed several illegal waste shipments transiting through Mouland (Fourons) on their way to the Netherlands,” explained Bjorn Leesen, Chief Inspector of the Fourons police force.

A total of 25 vehicles were checked. The biggest find was the truck carrying the  106 barrels of chemical waste. The driver had not fulfilled any conditions for transporting such substances.

The cargo was transferred under police escort to a specialised Liège company, which will destroy the waste. The Fourons local police, the Limburg public prosecutor’s office and the Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) are conducting further investigations into the origin of the drums. Several penalty notices have been issued, and the driver will have to appear in court.

In addition, a driver was fined €1,500 for using red diesel (i.e. heating oil colored red) as fuel. A repeat offender, he had to pay the fine immediately.

All the alcohol tests administered were negative.
