The province of Walloon Brabant announced on Wednesday that it had just launched a contract to equip four of its buildings on the 'BW Campus' in Wavre Nord with solar panels.
The aim is to achieve maximum coverage to meet the electricity needs of these administrative buildings, and to power future charging points for electric cars. €400,500 is being invested and the idea is to obtain feedback so that the approach can be applied to other provincial buildings.
The Archimède, Copernic, Gallilée and Marie Curie buildings are due to be fitted with solar panels before the end of June 2024. They have been chosen to cover peak electricity consumption, which is relatively stable over much of the year.
This investment is part of the Colibri plan supported by the MR-PS provincial majority, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions from administrative buildings by 12% by 2030. This first contract, which has just been launched for the installation of solar panels, will enable the Province to obtain feedback before extending the technology to other buildings.
"At some point, if we want to reduce our carbon footprint and move towards carbon neutrality, it is no longer enough to reduce our energy consumption and ease our energy bills: we also need to produce energy," commented Marc Bastin, Member of the Provincial Parliament.
"With this solar panel project, we are delighted to be able to produce electricity that will be consumed immediately to cover current and future needs. It is the result of forward-thinking and common sense and is part of the Colibri plan for Walloon Brabant."
