A serious road accident took place in Tournai from Friday night to Saturday morning, critically injuring a motorist who collided with a tree, according to local firefighters.
Reports state that the emergency services of Walloon Picardy were alerted to the accident along Léopold Boulevard in Tournai at around 2:05 am on Saturday.
A vehicle for extrication, a truck for marking, an emergency medical service, two ambulances, and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene.
The accident occurred along the city’s ring boulevard, heading towards the roundabout de l’Europe. For reasons thus far unknown, the driver of a Belgian registered car lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road, colliding with a tree that lined the boulevard.
“The driver and his passenger, both young, had to be cut free from the wreck. The driver is in a critical state,” explained Lieutenant Philippe Verhaege, who led the response.
Following stabilisation by emergency medical personnel, the motorist was transferred to the emergency services of the Union Centre of ChWapi in Tournai. The passenger, who was seated in the rear of the car, sustained minor injuries and has also been hospitalised.
