A 38-year-old man in Mechelen has been arrested for attempted murder following a stabbing incident, according to the Antwerp prosecutor’s office.
The conflict occurred over the weekend, resulting in one minor and one serious injury. Police received an emergency call from a 25-year-old woman around three in the morning on Saturday, who reported witnessing a stabbing.
Although the initial details were vague, with the woman describing the event as “very confusing,” the crime scene was established 45 minutes later as an apartment on Nieuwe Kapucijnenstraat.
Upon arrival, police found a gravely injured 30-year old Somali man, residing in Antwerp, inside the apartment. The 38-year-old occupant of the apartment, a relative of the victim, had suffered minor injuries.
The emergency services stabilised the severely injured man before transporting him to hospital, where his condition remains critical.
The 38-year-old was detained on suspicion of attempted murder following an interrogation. The woman was released without conditions, yet she has been charged with failure to assist a person in danger.
