Intense rainfall in West Flanders on Monday prompted 130 calls to the Westhoek Fire Brigade with locals' concern over flooding.
Westhoek, in West Flanders, has experienced a significant influx of rain in a short period of time. The region around Poperinge and Ypres is particularly affected, where fire crews have been deployed with sandbags to combat flooding in several streets.
The Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) issued a warning for heavy rainfall across the west and northwest of the country. A yellow warning had been implemented across the entire province, with the downpours primarily concentrated in Westhoek.
The fire service received 130 calls about water-related issues, most notably from Poperinge and Ypres.
"The concerns were primarily about streams overflowing their banks, threatening local houses," commented Kristof Louagie from the Westhoek Fire brigade. Some streets have been temporarily closed due to floodwater.
