Just a quarter of Belgians have used generative artificial intelligence (AI), with a mere 5% using it daily, according to international consultancy firm Deloitte.

The Digital Consumer Trends Report 2023, published Wednesday by the corporate lobby firm, shows that one in four Belgians has used generative AI.

Most use this technology infrequently, with only one in five using it weekly and one in twenty daily. For a third of respondents, the technology has only been tested out of curiosity.

About 7% of Belgian respondents use AI regularly in their professional activities, Deloitte found. Half the survey participants also expressed concern about potential job losses due to AI in the future.

“We find that people mainly use AI for leisure, to see what these tools have to offer,” noted Vincent Fosty, Head of Technology, Media, and Telecommunications at Deloitte.

The study also highlights a lack of user awareness about AI’s flaws. Notably, one in three people believe that technology always provides unbiased and factually accurate responses. In reality, the currently available AI tools can make incorrect predictions, Deloitte warns.

For the annual global consumer technology habits survey, Deloitte surveyed 38,000 individuals across 22 countries, including 2,000 Belgians.
