Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has been reappointed for a four-year term by Parliament, according to the announcement made by the Speaker of the Deputies Chamber.

Leader of the Spanish Socialist Party, Pedro Sánchez secured an absolute majority of 179 votes, thanks to the vital support from seven deputies of the right-wing Catalan separatist party, Junts per Catalunya.

Its leader, Carles Puigdemont, has been living in exile in Waterloo, Belgium since having orchestrated the illegal Catalan referendum in 2017. Sánchez gained their support in exchange for a controversial amnesty measure that has sparked nationalist protests.

Hundreds of thousands of conservatives and far-right supporters protested on Sunday, encouraged by the defeated side in the election, the Popular Party (PP). A fresh demonstration is scheduled for Saturday in Madrid.

PP leader Albert Nuñez Feijo has also appealed to hi party's political grouping in the EU, who are now campaigning on the issue, claiming the amnesty law goes against the rule of law. Feijo has even accused Sánchez of being Orban's best friend in Europe, which was vehemently denied as false by the Socialists & Democrats (S&D) grouping in the European Parliament.

In office since 2018, Sánchez is now tasked with forming a new government with his coalition partner, Sumar, effectively ending almost four months of political stalemate since the legislative elections on July 23.
