Greece: Cargo ship sinks near Lesbos, 13 people missing

A Comoros-flagged cargo ship sank off the Greek island of Lesbos on Sunday, carrying 14 people aboard, according to Greek coastguards.

A helicopter from the navy was able to rescue one passenger, public broadcaster Ert News reported.

The ongoing rescue operation involves five vessels, three coastguard ships, two navy and air force helicopters, and a navy frigate, with strong winds sweeping the area.

The beleaguered vessel was carrying a cargo of salt from Egypt destined for Istanbul, per the Greek news agency ANA.

According to ANA’s report, citing the coastguard, the cargo ship sank approximately 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km) southwest of Lesbos island.

The crew comprised of two Syrians, four Indians, and eight Egyptians, ANA added.
