Munich Airport will be closed to traffic from Tuesday morning due to paralysing snow and freezing rain, officials there announced on Monday evening. The closure is likely to last the entire day, they said.
Heavy snowfall caused chaos over the weekend on air and rail transport in Bavaria, particularly in the capital, Munich.
All flights set to depart or arrive at the Munich airport between 06:00 (05:00 GMT) and 12:00 (11:00 GMT) on Tuesday have now been cancelled. This is due to weather forecasts predicting freezing rain overnight, which would render air traffic impossible, at least throughout the morning, airport officials explained.
Ground crew will work to de-ice the tarmac on Tuesday morning. However, the airport authority has already cautioned that most flights may have to be cancelled throughout the day for safety reasons, and has advised passengers to contact their airlines.
