Germany has foiled 18 planned terrorist attacks by Islamists since 2010, according to its federal criminal police office.

Half of the thwarted attacks targeted the country’s most populous region, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The planned targets included the leader of the far-right party, Pro NRW, in 2013, German soldiers in 2016 and 2017, and a Shi’ite mosque, police officers and a nightclub in Frankfurt in 2018.

In 2017, there were plans for a ricin attack in Cologne.

In seven instances, police intervention followed foreign intelligence.

The Federal Office noted that additional plans that were thwarted at very early stages were not included in these figures.
