Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta launched its new social network Threads in Europe at midday on Thursday, presenting a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter).

Threads was previously launched in other parts of the world in July, but its European release was delayed until now. This postponement allowed Meta time to assess the potential impact of European regulations, specifically the digital data protection law.

But since noon on Thursday, Threads has been available in all 27 EU Member States. Meta's new platform, intended as a competitor to X, amassed a staggering 100 million users in less than five days after launching in the United States.

X has regularly come under fire from users and advertisers alike since billionaire Elon Musk took over the social medium last year, with the company's workforce shrinking by roughly 75% since the takeover.
