A 31-year-old man is to appear before the East Flanders Assize Court in Ghent for the alleged murder of his 32-year old mistress last year, officials announced on Thursday.
The incident occurred on the evening of 25 June 2022, on a rural road in Overmere, East Flanders. The suspect reportedly shot the woman inside her vehicle, before giving himself up to his sister, who alerted emergency services. The victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The incident was said to be rooted in relationship issues, but officials have not provided further details surrounding it. The victim was the suspect’s mistress, and an argument about ending their affair was reported to have taken place in the vehicle.
Authorities promptly arrested the man for homicide, a charge upheld by the indictment division of the Ghent Court, which referred the case to the Assize Court of East Flanders. The trial is expected to begin in the first half of next year.
