A 76-year-old Belgian tourist has died in southern Mexico following an animal attack on a beach. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.

The attack occurred on Thursday morning (local time) at a seaside resort in the Mexican state of Guerrero by the Pacific Ocean. The 76-year-old man reportedly suffered leg injuries, according to the AP news agency and other media outlets.

He was staying with his wife at a nearby holiday resort at the time of the attack. Another woman was also severely injured. The beach has subsequently been temporarily closed.

The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident, with investigations ongoing to determine whether the man was bitten by a shark or a crocodile.

Earlier in the month, a woman was killed by a shark in another Mexican region further north. However, Guerrero State's Tourism Secretary, Santos Ramírez, told a local newspaper that experts believe he may have been attacked by a crocodile, "as the water temperature is not suitable for sharks."

Additionally, no sharks were detected in the water by the navy following the incident.
