A Belgian lorry driver was arrested near Cologne on Saturday following a multi-country police chase, German media reported on Sunday.

The driver initially fled a police checkpoint in Belgium on Friday night, and headed towards the Netherlands, according to the German broadcaster WDR. While in the Netherlands, he collided with a police vehicle before continuing onward to Germany.

Despite attempts by the police to halt his journey using a spiked mat, the suspect continued to drive on the rim of his tyres for another 10 kilometres.

The driver was eventually apprehended in the Cologne region.

German law enforcement deployed 30 vehicles and a helicopter to end the pursuit.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest.
