The UK’s Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has apologised following a joke about drugging his wife with Rohypnol, known as a date-rape drug.

According to the British tabloid the Sunday Mirror, Cleverly allegedly told guests at a reception that it wasn’t “really illegal” to slip the drug into his wife’s drink nightly, provided it was a small dose. His comment came hours after he unveiled stricter measures against spiking drinks.

The Home Secretary is also reported to have jokingly advised that the secret to a long-lasting marriage is ensuring one’s spouse is "someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there".

A spokesperson for the Home Secretary has since clarified that it was a clearly paradoxical joke made in private conversation and that Cleverly extends his apologies.
