Two teenagers aged 15 and 16 have been placed in a detention centre after ransacking a police van in Antwerp on New Year’s Eve, according to the Antwerp prosecutor’s office.

Ten others were also arrested in connection with the incident.

The van was parked on Sint-Bernardsesteenweg, when a group of around 20 people spotted it and launched the attack.

Mirrors were kicked off, a door broken, and two windows smashed. Within the vehicle, items were stolen, including bullet-proof vests, batons, laptops, body cameras, and a pair of handcuffs,  a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office said.

Police quickly returned in large numbers to the scene. They were able to apprehend twelve suspects and recover some of the stolen equipment. The exact role of each individual in the incident is still being investigated.

Eight of the suspects are minors.
