Applying for the Flemish premium for electric cars will not be possible until February when the online application desk becomes publicly available. The Council of State is also expected to give its advice soon.

The Flemish Government had requested an urgent opinion on the premium for electric cars, but it was not accepted by the Council of State. Therefore, the process is expected to take until February.

In other words, this means that the premium cannot be applied for at present. The online desk will only open "over the course of February," said the Department of Mobility and Public Works.

Persuading people to go electric

In the first year, people can expect a premium of €5,000 for a new car and €3,000 for a used vehicle. This is the case for new cars that cost a maximum of €40,000. For second-hand ones, the original list price cannot exceed €60,0000.

With the premium, the Flemish Government wants to persuade private individuals to buy an electric car, as the price threshold is still too high for many people. The Flemish Government has earmarked €20 million for 2024.

The premium can be requested for cars that were ordered after 25 September 2023 but only registered online as from 1 January 2024. That will be possible at www.vlaanderen.be, after the advice of the Council of State and the final approval by the Flemish government.

In practice, this will come down to sometime in February.

Private individuals will then be able to sign up, as well as register personal details and the sales agreement. The application procedure itself will not be running at that time as that can only be started once the new regulations are published in the Belgian Official Gazette.

However, conditions or other provisions may still change after the advice of the Council of State, said the Department of Mobility and Public Works.
