The Frankfurt Labour Court on Monday authorised the German train drivers’ union, GDL, to launch a fresh strike against Germany's railway utility, Deutsche Bahn (DB).

DB had sought a court order to prevent the nationwide train driver strike, due to begin on Wednesday. The railway company had argued that the strike lacked legal grounding, but the court did not endorse this view.

DB plans to appeal on Tuesday, claiming the strike is “entirely unnecessary.”

GDL had called on Sunday for a new nationwide strike from Wednesday to Friday following unsuccessful negotiations on wages and working hours with Deutsche Bahn.

On 8 December, GDL launched a 24-hour public transport walkout, causing severe disruption to services run by DB.
