Firefighters in Brussels responded to a blaze on the fourth floor of a seven-storey building on Rue Fernand Léger in Evere, at around 8pm on Friday.

No injuries were reported, however, four residents require rehousing as their apartments are now uninhabitable due to the damage.

“The fire started on an apartment’s terrace,” said Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels firefighters, on Saturday.

On their arrival, the evacuation of the building’s residents was already nearing completion, with the assistance of the Brussels-North police zone. He added, “The people were accommodated in a warmth-providing Stib bus.”

The origin of the fire remains undetermined, albeit it is likely accidental, according to the spokesperson.

“Two apartments are declared uninhabitable, including the one where the fire originated on the terrace and the neighbouring apartment badly affected by soot. In total, four residents need to be rehoused. The local police and the Evere municipality will manage this process,” Derieuw added.
