From Thursday morning, long traffic jams are expected during rush hour on the E314 motorway in the directions of Brussels and Leuven, announced the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV).

Towards Leuven and Brussels, there will be around 45 minutes of traffic jams at around 08:45 on Thursday morning, the AWV noted.

"Normally the traffic jam starts further towards Leuven but due to the works the traffic jam has been moved up this morning," the agency said. The site of the Flemish traffic centre (Verkeerscentrum Vlaanderen) showed how the traffic jam already started between Diest and Aarschot.

Trouble for several days

The final works on the rush hour lane on the E314 towards Leuven and Brussels, between Aarschot and Wilsele, started last week. From Thursday, work is also being carried out during the morning rush hour. In the other direction, towards Limburg, the rush hour lane has already been opened to traffic.

A contractor is working to remove the existing markings and replace them with the long white lane markings. In recent days, the right lane and the emergency lane have regularly been closed for this purpose, but from 25 January, the works will start at 07:00.

As a result, the morning rush will be "considerably more difficult" than normal, the Agency warns. Disruptions are also expected next week (from 29 January), possibly during the morning rush hour too.

The rush hour lane is planned to open in mid-February, according to current estimations. Tests will be carried out from 7 February, with the new lane being opened temporarily.
